Data Preparation

Insight provide a full range of services in the preparation of health data.

Numerous tasks are involved in preparing data for subsequent analysis including:

  • Importing data - importing data with different file types or message passing techniques, and converting it into a more accessible file type

  • Data integration – combining data from different file types and sources (this can become exceedingly complex when the data to be integrated comes from different organizations)

  • Data quality checks – including exploring missing data, normality and range checks, consistency between measures, and basic plots of the data

  • Data conversion – converting data from one variable type to another

  • Coding – converting qualitative data into numeric data

It is important to note that a number of different business decisions can be made as the quality of the data is assessed including

  • Go – continue the project as originally planned

  • Wait – while the questions to be asked of the data are reviewed in response to the quality of the data

  • Stop – in the worst-case scenarios poor quality data might mean that the project cannot be completed
